Paper-Source + west elm Craft Night at the Summit!

The next Birmingham Craft Night has officially been announced, and it’s going to be a good one, crafters. I’ve been talking with west elm Birmingham about what a collaboration with another fun Summit store would look like, and Paper-Source was such an obvious choice. The wonderful people at Paper-Source have generously donated rolls and rolls of crepe paper, and we once again have our local west elm to thank for opening their store to us to make this happen.

I love these crepe paper flowers, off the top of my head I can think of 100 ways to use them. They made great gift toppers like you see below, but how about incorporating them into your next sit-down party and using them as place cards or a centerpiece? Or stringing together a dozen or so for a festive garland? At this craft night, you’ll learn the basics for constructing these flowers, and I’ll also teach you some fun techniques using scissor work and watercolors to give each one its own personality.

crepepaperflowersAnd did I mention? Thanks to our generous partners, west elm at The Summit and Paper-Source, this event is free. F-R-E-E! Spots are limited, so hurry over to our page at Eventbrite and save your seat, and we’ll see you at The Summit Birmingham on August 27th!

(8/14 Update: even after opening 10 more spots, I’m so sorry, we are sold out! But be on the lookout for more Craft Nights to come!)

May 2015 West Elm Craft Night Recap

Another great West Elm Craft Night in the books!

Girls from allover town came together last Thursday night to sip wine, eat cupcakes, make crafts, and have fun meeting each other and creating. We set up right in the front of the store, and personally, just being in the midst of West Elm makes me feel so inspired. I value this partnership with West Elm in so many ways, and am so appreciative for their support of the Birmingham creative community; thanks Jeannie, Elda, and the rest of the staff for all that you do!

The 6:00 session got right to work, and I loved hanging out with these awesome ladies. Sandy, Amanda, Tara, Erin, Jennifer, and Beth were some clever little crafters!

Everyone snacked on red velvet and cheesecake-stuffed chocolate cupcakes and strawberry-mint water. I love the mid-century rolling bar cart they were served on, and that silver star sculpture is perfectly atomic and goes with the rest of that space-era furniture, don’t you think? After running around all afternoon getting everything ready, I was absolutely parched. Lucky for me, my friend Beth hopped over the weekly Farmers Market that is at the Summit each Thursday in the summer, and came back with the Watermelon Lemon cold press from Sprout & Pour. Amazing!WECN1

Abby, Caroline, Casey, and Allison crafted with us during the 7:30 session, and these girls had me laughing from the second they sat down at the craft table. Abby is fellow India-mama; I always love hanging with her and talking all things adoption and India. I’m also hoping I can sneak out to Edgewood one night for Caroline and Casey’s Barre class, it sounds like so much fun! (And how cute is Allison’s shirt?)

Look at these gorgeous luggage tags everyone made! I love them! Great job ladies!

WECN4Thanks West Elm and all the crafty gals who hung out with us last week! We are working on another Craft Night with some other Summit friends for July, so I hope you’ll stayed tuned for more info 🙂

West Elm Craft Night!

I wish I could find the words to tell you how excited I am about the next Birmingham Craft Night…the next event will be Thursday, March 26, at West Elm at the Summit! I used to drive to Atlanta just to go West Elm and they are a huge influence of my personal style, so the opportunity to work with this wonderful brand is just incredible.

Jeannie, the lovely gal who runs their social media and events, reached out to see if I wanted to collaborate on a craft that can be incorporated in an Easter table setting, and the collab is going one step further with Spark & Arrow.

Each participant will be making a set of these Easter egg place cards. We’ll be sculpting and stamping and eating cupcakes and shopping and styling, and it’s only $15 to participate! You’ll walk away with 4-6 custom created place cards for your Easter table, and a new skill to employ for every table setting after this one!

What’s even more fun, is that the Saturday before, the girls of Spark & Arrow will be doing a live tablescape event in-store. On Saturday, March 21, stop by West Elm to see two versions of an Easter table and their live photo shoot event. Bring by your OWN dinnerware staples and let them help you incorporate your favorite dishes into a modern tablescape. How fun is that? Stay tuned to their blog and follow them on Instagram for more info!

(L) Kamin of Spark & Arrow and myself, talking through how to incorporate the craft into the beautiful products available at West Elm. (R) I can’t wait to share with you one of my favorite crafting supplies!

Here’s all of the info for this event, including how to register:

Where: West Elm at the Summit, 320 Summit Blvd., 35243

What’s Included: All supplies and step-by-step instruction to make your own Easter egg place “cards” plus…cupcakes. (If you don’t me yet, cupcakes are my jam.)
How to Register: Simply email me at (yes, that’s “ymail” and not “gmail”!) to reserve your space, and upon arrival that night you can pay with either cash, check, or credit card. Space is limited to 16 people so don’t delay!

Looking forward to another fun night of crafts, cupcakes, and conversation! Thanks so much to West Elm and Spark & Arrow for this wonderful opportunity to collaborate.

Birmingham Craft Night – Fabric Flower Pins

I am so excited to be back with the next installment of Birmingham Craft Night! I am in awe of how much interest there was in last month’s event, and so grateful to those who attended or gave me some encouragement along the way.

This Craft Night is also supporting something VERY EXCITING in our near future. Unfortunately, I have to keep it a little quite for now (no, I’m not pregnant), but trust me when I say, it’s very awesome, and a worthy cause to say the least 😉

Anyway! This month, to brighten the cold gray winter days we’ve had lately, we will be making these pretty fabric flowers pins:

I made these a few years ago for a Christmas Craft Bazaar at my old company, and sold out within a couple hours. I think they’re so great to accessorize an outfit or tote bag, but also make cute gift toppers and double as a gift themselves! Kind of Frenchy too, don’t you think? I heard the chorus of “this time doesn’t work for my schedule but I want to participate!” so this month I’m going to offer two nights in hopes of being conducive to the busy lives I know we all lead!

When: Friday, February 20 at 6:15 AND Sunday, February 22 at 5:30.
Where: Malinda’s house in Helena, Alabama (address provided upon registration)
Cost: $15
What’s Included: All supplies and step-by-step instruction to make your own fabric flower pin, a craft box with tissue paper for gift-giving (or for keeping!), a hand-crafted name tag waiting for you at your work station, cupcakes, and light appetizers. As a bonus and time permitting, I’ll also show how to make mini fabric flower poms as well! (I also have plenty of wine left over from the last craft night 😉
How to Register: Each class is open to 10 participants, simply email me, malindakay {at} ymail dot com (yes, Ymail, not gmail!) and let me know you’ll be there! Also please let me know if you would like to make a pink, red, or white flower. (For simplicity’s sake I’m trying to limit it to these 3 colors, but if these choices are so terrible to your own personal taste that you’re participation hangs in the balance, then I’m sure we can work something out!)

Looking forward to another fun night of crafts and conversation!

Birmingham Craft Night Wrap-Up

Last Friday night, 10 awesome women were in my dining room, sipping wine, stamping, stenciling, and Sculpey-ing. We had such a great time, and thank you so much to everyone who took this first step with me to see this dream become a reality! I enjoyed meeting those of you who I had never met, reconnecting with people I haven’t seen in years, and seeing so many familiar faces too! Additionally, I was able to make my next payment for our Costa Rica mission trip! I’m a Christian, and one things Christians love to say is, “I am blessed.” It rings very true here. Thank you all, sincerely, so very VERY much.

If you are interested in upcoming Birmingham Craft Nights, please send me an email at malindakay {at} ymail dot com and I’ll add you to the email list, or just follow me on Instagram because I’ll definitely be sharing info on upcoming Craft Nights over there!

Here are a few photos from the night: the wonderful people, the things we created, and the cupcakes we ate. Check out this post for the crafts that we made at this Craft Night, featuring beautiful photos by Spark & Arrow Creative! (And thank you sweet girls for the blog post you did on BCN!)

Crafts for Costa Rica! // Hello Birmingham Craft Night

This June, Zack and I will be leading our youth group to Costa Rica to work with Costa Rica Mission Projects. It’s our 2nd time to get to work with Wil Bailey, his lovely wife Yolanda, and the rest of the amazing CRMP team. They are doing incredible things in this country, and we are so excited to be part of it once again. As to be expected, there is a pretty significant cost associated with doing such a thing.

I thought that hosting a craft night in my home would be a really, really fun way to help raise some of these funds. Of course I have no idea if this idea will work, but here are the details in hopes that is will! Ultimately, the hope of me and my pal Tiffany of StudioFlower is to establish what we’ve been calling Birmingham Craft Night…but that’s later, this is now!

When: Friday, January 23, 2015 at 6:15pm (FYI: a Parent’s Night Out fundraiser, hosted by my teammates at our church, will be going on at this time! )
Where: Malinda’s house in Helena, Alabama (address provided upon registration)
Cost: $25
What’s Included: A custom stenciled tote bag, a coordinating fob with a tassel and a stamped clay keychain, plus the knowledge of how to make something new and fun! Apps and cupcakes will also be provided. BYOWine!
How to Register: Simply email me, malindakay {at} ymail dot com and let me know you’ll be there! I have room for 14 people, but if for some incredible reason there are more people who are interested, then I will happily open another session!

With it being so close to Valentine’s Day, I worked up this example of what we’ll be making, although I’ll have a variety of other stencils and paint/tassel/keychain colors so you can create just what you want! And of course 1 million thanks to Sarah of Spark & Arrow for taking such lovely photos!

Hope to see you there!
